Subject:Standing Orders
PETER: "Well done, everyone," he says as the group chows down on some of Mack's MREs. "We have the tools to get off-planet now, and the rest should just be a matter of time. The trick with these new invaders around will be to keep ourselves safe until we're ready to act. To that end, I think we need a few standing orders."

PETER: "First we'll want to keep a regular watch. While the invaders may not be looking specifically for us, I'll wager they will be looking for evading zho soldiers. And I doubt they'll be too discriminating should they find us. Our best spotters are clearly Shooter and Mack, unless we're underground, in which case it's Mack and Rock. We should set our schedule accordingly to have at least one of our prime spotters on reconnaissance duty at any given time. They'll be released from mundane duties as necessary to perform this function."

PETER: "Second, we need some standard procedures for combat medicine. Erict," he says, glancing in his direction, "you're this unit's medic. Standing orders are when two or more of us are injured you should perform triage as best you can and prioritize your treatment accordingly. You're the skilled professional and none of us should second guess you. I know everyone here wants their mates to be treated before they are. But we have to defer to Erict's assessments for the good of the team as a whole."

PETER: "Which brings me to my third point. Erict needs an assistant medic, if only for situations where he's injured. I had a basic first aid course at the academy, but that was a long time ago. Can anyone do better than that? If not, we need to pick one of us to get some training from Erict. We can't afford to lose him, as yesterday showed us.

PETER: "Fourth, I want to set the chain of command. I've delegated responsibility for directing our unit in issues of zhodani relations to Marko. While military regulations prohibit him from any command position, you should give anything he says regarding the zho proper consideration. And since we're stuck on a zho world, that means pretty much everything. I've invited Marko to enlist, in which case I intend to give him an ad hoc appointment to sergeant, commensurate with his skills and the limits of my authority. But at present he's declined. Therefore, you should consider Shooter my official second in command, with the strong recommendation that he listen carefully to anything Marko has to say."

PETER: "Fifth and finally, I want to say a few things about my command philosophy. You're all members of Gamma Company, which makes you special forces. Each of you has abilities that can be of great use to us all, and the training to use them. I don't intend to micromanage you, nor do I intend to stand too firmly on ceremony. I want you all to exercise your initiative, and I don't want you to be shy about making observations and suggestions. We're in a situation that's new to all of us, and everyone's thoughts are important."

PETER OOC: Sorry about the complexities of number four. But since we're paying more attention to military regulations I didn't want to do anything that might be considered irregular.

SHOOTER: Shooter respectively waits until the lieutenant is finished speaking. His respect for this fleet officer has been growing since they first encountered him. He is cool under pressure and doesn't try to micro-manage. When he finishes speaking, Shooter nods and replies, "Yes sir," acknowledging the standing orders and promising to comply with them. Then he continues, "regarding a backup for Erict, sir, I will volunteer for that assignment. I had a First Responder refresher just before touching down." (TECH: Paramedics skill on a 14-)

PETER: "Right then. Erict, consider Shooter to be your assistant medic. Please make sure that he's appropriately outfitted with proper medical supplies. Speaking of which, supplies permitting, I'd like to see all of us equiped with some kind of basic first aid kit. And I for one would encourage you to provide what instruction you can in basic first aid." (i.e., I encourage all of us to buy Paramedics to full level.)

ERICT: Erict nods, and hands Shooter the backup medkit he's prepared in advance.

ERICT: Erict hesitates briefly, then simply says, "Yes sir." During what free time he has he will doublecheck the medkits of everyone in the squad, appraise the first aid skills of each, and aportion/ration the supplies appropriately. He is no teacher, but he will give anyone instruction the best he can when we have free time, as ordered. He will continue to watch out for opportunities to stock up on additional medical supplies, and makes sure to gently remind Mack and Rock to watch for that kind of thing in their scans of the collapsed buildings around us on a daily basis.

ROCK: Rock seems pleased with Peter's standing orders. He doesn't offer any particular comments but if asked he will affirm his firm support.

MARKO: Marko shows no sign of disagreeing with the orders placed by the Lt.
