Mining Oridium
Mining oridium is difficult, to say the least. Each prisoner has a quota of 5 kg of oridium per month. Any month where a prisoner does not meet quota is added to his prison sentence. For each 500 grams over 5 kg, the prisoner earns 1 credit that is paid in cash at the end of the month. Working against the inmates is the fact that the scale is deliberately set incorrectly (reduce all totals by 20%).
To mine oridium, the PC makes a skill roll each week (4 weeks in a month). If the roll comes out to success, he has mined 1 kg of oridium that week. For every point below success, he has mined an additional 100 grams of oridium. Thus, if the PC has an 8 or less roll, and rolls a 7 for the week, he has mined 1.1 kg (which is then reduced by 20% for the official scale). For every point above success, he has mined 250 kg less. Thus, if the PC has an 8 or less roll, and rolls a 9 for the week, he still managed to mine 750 grams of oridium.
Characters with a sustainable (no limitations) SPEED of higher than 2, get one additional mining roll per month per point of SPEED above 2. Subtract one bonus roll if the PC must concentrate on other things (such as maintaining life support to protect againt radiation sickness).
Characters working in the Danger Zone can add 2 to their skill roll as oridium is more plentiful down there. However, the Danger Zone has much higher levels of radiation. At the end of every year, each PC must make a CON roll to avoid a permanent -1 to BODY due to prolonged radiation exposure. The CON roll is made at -1 for every 4 weeks spend in the Danger Zone. PCs who are immune to radiation or disease do not need to make this roll.
If should be obvious that the scales are, both literally and figuratively, tipped against the inmates. New inmates are not likely to make quota for quite awhile.
Mining tools can be rented to improve mining ability. By default, all inmates have their belt of mining tools, for which the prision charges a rent of 100 grams of oridium per month. Other tools that can be rented include:
Rock Sapper - +2 to oridium mining roll - 200 grams per month
Mine Thumper - +3 to oridium mining roll - 250 grams per month
Mining Laser - +5 to oridium mining roll - 450 grams per month
Ore Processor - +2 to oridium mining roll and +1 roll per month - 500 grams per month
Oridium Extractor - +4 to oridium mining roll and +1 roll per month - 700 grams per month
Light Excavator - +2 to oridium mining roll and +2 rolls per month - 850 grams per month
Heavy Excavator - +3 to oridium mining roll and +3 rolls per month - 1000 grams per month
Tool rental must be approved by the mining engineer, who usually trusts this task the the chief mining trustee. Anyone who has been at the mine for more than a year can rent a Rock Sapper any time they want. If someone has been at the prison less than a year, but has made quota, then they can also rent a Rock Sapper. Cut offs for renting better tools are as follows. The cut off is after rental costs. Thus, to qualify for a Mine Thumper, an inmate who has been using a Rock Sapper must turn in 6.3 kg (.1 kg rental for normal tools, plus .2 kg rental for the Rock Sapper).

Once an inmate has qualified for a specific tool, they may keep that tool for as long as they continue to make the qualification cut off. If they miss the qualification cut off for one month, they may also keep the tool but, if they miss it for two months, they drop down to the tool that their new turn in amount qualifies them for.
The rental equipment does not lend itself well to interior inspection. Like the mining lights, the mining tools are sealed units. The big difference between them and the mining lights, is that there is a way to unseal the mining equipment other than breaking the case. However the method of unsealing uses some sort of sophisicated electonic lock. With a proper Security Systems toolkit, you would have a moderate negative modifer (about -3). With no toolkit, it is not possible to open the lock. Using the electronic toolkit would incur a -8 penalty. Mining Tools are turned in at the end of each day and part of the turn-in process is a quick inspection of the device.
Mining Accidents - Whenever a character rolls a natural 17 or 18 while mining, there is a chance of a mining accident from falling rocks.
With a 17, the character must make a DEX roll or suffer 4d6 damage, plus 1d6 per point by which the DEX roll was failed. If the roll is successful, 2d6 damage is taken. If the roll is made by half, no damage is taken.
With an 18, the DEX roll is at -4 and damage is 6d6, plus 2d6 per point of failure. The roll is successful, 4d6 damage is taken. If the roll is made by half, no damage is taken.
Someone with Danger Sense that works out of combat is allowed a Danger Sense roll and, if successful, they avoid the danger by diving out of the way. Otherwise, they must make their DEX rolls.
Character Mining Efforts and Reputation
The table shows what the PC actually mined. The monthly total shows what they actually turned in. The group is free to manipulate the results as long as the total turned in my the group doesn't exceed the total mined by the group.
