IANNA (OOC): Ianna asked Isobella to pull Tal back from the bugs so that Dasan can torch them.

ISOBELLA (OOC): I don't think Isobella can move, grab, and move. Can she Martial throw Tal out of the way without doing more damage? Slide him along the deck instead of slamming him into it? Not that that will move him far, but it will bring him closer and put Isobella in front (with all levels on defense!)

GM: I don't have my 5th ed. book with me here at work, but I'm pretty sure you can't move, grab and move. Martial Throw is really about using the target's momentum against them so I don't think it would be appropriate either. She could do a half move to Tal and stand over him and then, on phase 9 after the bugs have gone, use her remaining half move to grab him. On phase 10, she could then move again.

GM: I also seem to recall that 5th ed. has a "Grab By" maneuver that might allow her to grab Jack as part of a move.

IANNA (OOC): Grab By is the move she'd have to use. -3 OCV, -4 DCV. As part of a full move, she can move to the target, attempt a grab and then use the rest of her movement to take the object with her. The good news is the minuses go away after phase 8 so on 9, she'll be at her normal DCV. Anyway, this would get Tal out of the way on Phase 8, Dex 33 which lets Dasan have plenty of room to catch as many bugs with his attack.

GM: I'm not clear on why the penalties go away at the end of phase 8. Penalties normally remain until the person's next phase. Is this something special with Grab By?

IANNA (OOC): Yeah, it appears to be special with Grab By. Let me write out the section that mentions it:

GMB pg 388

"When the character performs the Grab, in addition to the penalties for the maneuver he suffers the -2 OCV penalty if he attempts to Grab an Accessible Focus, weapon, or object. However, if the Grab succeeds, he does not suffer the typical reduction to DCV caused by Grabbing someone. He only suffers the DCV penalty for the Maneuver itself (-4) during the Segment in which the object was Grabbed -- his DCV returns to normal at the beginning of the next segment (assuming he has control of the object)."

GM: The context of the paragraph above seems to be for grabbing a foci, weapon or object. I take it to mean that if the person uses the grab by maneuver to pick up something like a small object or weapon, they only suffer the penalties for that segment and are back to normal for the next segment. However, if they grabbing a person (or even it big, heavy object) normal penalties would continue to apply until the person's next phase. The "However" at the beginning of the second sentence seems to tie the sentence to the previous sentence about grabbing foci or objects.

ISOBELLA (OOC): I agree, grab by penalties would apply till her next phase, which would result in her getting hit many times (since she can't use even use skill levels). Her armor is good, but not that good. But looking at Martial Throw, it looks like that should be usable. While you can do extra damage if you wait and intercept someone charging you, that isn't a requirement. In fact the most common use of that power in my supers game is for the Martial artist to go up to the big bad villain and throw him to the ground so that the strong ally (like Jack) can hit him. In this case, Isobella doesn't want to hurt the target, so she wouldn't want the extra damage anyway.

IANNA (OOC): Yeah, what if you did the grab by, then on 9 abort to dodge if you get swarmed by more than 1 bug? That way you'd be at crazy dcv and they'd likely miss. Yes, you'd sacrifice your phase 10 action but it might be worth it. If Shooter and Dasan can kill a high number with their 8/9 attacks then it may not matter. My concern is that if we don't get Tal out of there, he'll take AOE damage without his FF protecting him. I could also move him on my phase 10 action while Shooter holds his phase 9 attack.

ISOBELLA (OOC): Good idea, but her DCV would still be much lower than if she attacked. She doesn't have a martial dodge in her college, so she'd have to do a normal dodge and wouldn't be able to user her martial arts levels. She does have 5 different throws, but only basic Martial throw really applies here, the others involve joint locks, disarm, or escape.

GM: Yes, Marty's idea to have Isobella abort to a dodge will work. I don't have access to the GMB here at work but the BBB specifically states that the target of the martial throw ends up in the adjoining hex so I don't see that maneuver helping much.

IANNA (OOC): Yeah, a throw just feels wrong. Joe, I'm surprised you don't have some sort of abort/defensive move with your martial arts.

GM: Another option is to have Curt do something. If he gets hit again, he will probably drop, but he is up one of the columns with no bugs around right now. He would have to turn off his Goo Form (desolidification) but he would not have to move. He could use his stretching to grab Tal and pull him away.

IANNA (OOC): Okay, I wasn't sure how much stretching Curt had but if he can then maybe we should do that. If he can stay up on the column I'm guessing that the bugs will leave him alone.

GM: Unless Jason says otherwise, I will assume that Curt will pull Jack out of harms way. So I just need an action from Isobella to resolve phase 8.

IANNA: {Arg,} Ianna mentally replies as she realizes both Jack and Tal went down. {Isobella, help get Tal out of harm's way. I'm getting Jack. Shooter and Dasan, light them up as soon as we have them clear or unless you get a clear shot. Curt, can you help keep these bugs from swarming us? Marco, you're doing great. Keep locking them down one at a time.} The agile martial artist quickly darted past the two nearby bugs then brought her focus upon Jack's prone body. Using her phasing ability she attempted to move him next to her.

TECH:
Free move 1" toward Dasan and Isobella
Maintain Aporting Field, END: 1
+1 in DCV
Aportation on Jack to Ianna's position; OCV 12, DCV 13 [rolled 9]; END 4

OOC: It would be great if we can clear the area so either Dasan can hit as many as he can before the end of 8. The bugs will then go but Shooter can drop a grenade on 9. Ideally Curt and Marco can keep the bugs from getting 3 to 1 odds on several us.
Isobella
33
ISOBELLA: Isobella stays on the outskirts of the group, hoping that she can attract the attention of the bugs without actually getting hit. She takes a jab at a nearby bug.

ISOBELLA (tech): attack bug 31 using jab (+1 OCV/+3 DCV), two levels on OCV, four levels on DCV (13 OCV/17 DCV) [rolled 8], damage [rolled 2 6 5 3 2 5 6 4 - Total: 33, Body: 10], knockback [rolled 4]

DASAN(Tech): Now that Jack has been moved Dasan will try to get as many bugs in his line of fire as possible while staying clear of Shooters grenade blast. DEX 35 - Ianna moves closer to Dasan and Isobella and teleports Jack to her.

DEX 33 - Isobella hits bug 31 for 22 STUN. The bug is stunned.

DEX 26 - Curt does a have move forward and then reaches down with an extended pseudopod and grabs Tal, pulling him up to safety.

DEX 23 - Dasan fires the final charge from his Flamethrower, towards bugs 9, 10 and 24. All three abort their phase 9 actions to dive for cover and avoid the fire.
