Rule Name:FTL Travel
The Champions description of this power reads as follows:

"This Standard Power is the ability to travel faster than light when in space, for a base cost of 10 Character Points. A character may only travel faster than light in space, never in atmosphere. The GM can assume that it takes some time to get up to full FTL speeds.

For the base of 10 points, a character can travel at a max speed equal to precisely the speed of light, that is one light year per year. 2x velocity costs 2 points."

This is probably fine for an Earth-based Champions campaign but won't do for a galaxy spanning campaign like Champions of the Empire.

Here is the new description.

This Standard Power is the ability to travel faster than light when in space, for a base cost of 10 Character Points. A character may only travel faster than light in open space, never in an atmosphere. FTL travel takes 1 hour to activate. During this time, the character is accelerating and aligning to make the jump to "subspace".

FTL speeds cannot be used to travel from one location to another inside a solar system.

To safely activate FTL travel, the character must be well away from a gravity well. For a typical earth-type planet, the safe distance is 30 million kilometers. If the character attempts to make the transition prior to reaching the safe distance roll 3d6 to determine whether the transition was safely made to FTL travel. The character needs to roll and 18 or less, minus 1 for every million miles (or fraction thereof) from the safe distance. Thus, if the character is 4.1 million miles from the safe distance, they must roll a 13 or less to safely transition to FTL travel.

For the base of 10 points, a character can travel at a max speed equal to precisely the speed of light, that is one light year per year.

FTL costs no END to use.

Astrogation
By itself, FTL travel gives no inherent astrogational abilities. The character will need some sort of astrogation computer, as well as astrogation skill, to get to where he wants. For +10 points, FTL Travel includes astrogation such that the character can designate any star that he sees as his destination and FTL travel will take him to that system. The character would be well advised to take the power N-Space Flight, however, as they could easily arrive in the system near the outermost planets, with many months of N-Space travel to get to the inhabited planet(s) in the system.

Limitations
Limitations may not work exactly as you intend so talk to the GM if you plan to take this power. For example, since it already takes one hour to activate the power, if you take the limitation Extra Time, it starts from one hour. Thus, a 1/4 Extra Time limitation increases the transition time from 1 hour to 5 hours.

Advantages
Faster Transition: This advantage allows the character to make the transition to FTL speed faster than the normal one hour.
